Introduction

In English-speaking countries they are usually called Tourist Offices and are generally popular among almost all the tourists around the world. It is no wonder as their staff provide useful information about local attractions, accommodation possibilities or available and preferable means of transport. In the Czech Republic we call these offices Infocentra. This lesson may help the members of their staff to enrich the vocabulary they might find useful when communicating with tourists.
V anglicky mluvících zemích jsou nazývány Tourist Offices a jsou všeobecně oblíbené mezi turisty celého světa. Není ani divu, vzhledem k tomu, že jejich zaměstnanci poskytují užitečné informace o místních atrakcích, možnostech ubytování a dostupných a vhodných možnostech dopravy. V České republice je nazýváme Infocentra. Tato lekce může napomoci jejich zaměstnancům rozšířit si slovní zásobu užitečnou při komunikaci s turisty.

Be enthusiastic about your local attractions!



The tourists in your office will probably not be eager only to get the right information; they will certainly seek also your opinion on things you offer to them as a local person. The tourists simply want to see and experience as much as they can in the short time they have for their holidays. Thus, you may be as enthusiastic as you please about the local attractions you personally like. It is your responsibility, after all, to give the tourists the right insight into the Central Bohemian Region as you know it :-) Try to find the right balance between being objective and personal when giving your recommendations. 


Tips and tricks


Making recommendations (Don´t forget to see Tips and Tricks!) 

-  In giving recommendations we often use modal verbs: 
can, could, must, shall, may, might etc. to make them more personal: 
Křivoklát is a “must-see” attraction. 
You shouldn´t miss the St. Barbora´s Church. 
You can always hire a car. 
Your children might also like the Fairy-tales Museum. 

-  To be more personal and enthusiastic you may also use some expressions 
that make your recommendations more attractive, such as: 

You definitely want to see...
You definitely want to see our local annual trade. 

Don´t leave our region without....
Don´t leave our region without visiting Kutná Hora. 

It is worth visiting....	
What is really worth visiting is the hill fort of Budeč. 

Don´t forget to...
Don´t forget to try the famous Czech beer.

The tourists probably contact you, as members of Tourist Offices´ staff, 
not only personally but also by e-mail or telephone. Let´s focus on the 
writing tasks you probably time to time need to deal with. 

Here is the list of questions you may come across in your e-mail box.  
Choose 5 of them and try to answer them as well and honestly as possible. 
You can use the expressions from the Grammar and language box above.
